Question
Cory place –
What size engine does this unit require?

Josie Krugerud –
Hello Cory, this unit is designed to be coupled to the power take-off of a tractor via a PTO shaft. The HP required from the tractor’s PTO, to achieve full power from the unit, is 54HP. If you are looking for a single/two bearing generator end to couple direct to an engine, please contact one of our sales reps for more information. 507-357-6821.

Question
William McAdoo –
I have 100 hp tractors with bot 540 and 1000 ptos. How can I run a 27kw generator on lower rpms?

Josie Krugerud –
Hello William, This is a great question. The 27PTO, as well with our other 540 units, requires a steady 540RPM to maintain correct voltage and frequency. Some do use their 1000RPM tractor and lower to 540, so long as the tractor’s engine governor can maintain 540RPM. If 540RPM is not maintained, you not only can damage the equipment, you could potentially damage any load that is being powered.

Question
Josh –
Is there a way to regulate the frequency on this? For instance if this was hooked to a home and took a surge in power demand and the PTO dropped below 540 could the change in frequency damage electrical equipment? Thanks.

Dale Riebel –
Josh, a drop in input speed from the tractor will drop the frequency. This will in-turn drop the voltage as well. Normally, you protect for voltage surges (high voltage) with either voltage surge strips or a whole-house voltage surge suppression system. You can consult a local electrician for that type of equipment. If the tractor is in good operating condition and size properly, the governor on the tractor will compensate for any load applied to generator and you would expect very little voltage and frequency drops under normal operating conditions.

Question
Lonnie Dunn –
This 27 kw generator shows needing 54 pto hp to operate properly, but the math (science) requires 0.758 hp to generate 1 kw. Do you allow for extra hp on this unit so it will not be overloaded? I have a 48 pto hp tractor and would like to run this 27 kw generator so I can pull my entire house. Your thoughts?

Josie Krugerud –
You are correct that 1HP = 0.7457 KWm (the m represents mechanical power). That formula is a straight mechanical conversion so your tractor is producing a little over 35 KWm at the PTO. Our 2 HP to 1 KWe (the e represents electrical power) is a generalized and simplified formula that takes into account the loss of power in the PTO drive shaft, gearbox and generator end since none of them convert your tractor power at 100% efficiency.

David Bercegeay –
If I ran this unit with only 37hp at the pto, wouldn’t the tractor engine just bog down with excessive (more than 37hp drawn at the pto).?

Question
Steven Medlock –
There is not a lifting hook on the 27 PTO generator
How do you lift it to mount it on the trailer?

Dale Riebel –
Steven, you would used a heavy duty strap and wrap it around the generator to lift it. Please contact our Technical Support Department @ 507-357-8334 if needed.
